Today's reading is the beginning of Nahum, a prophecy against the Assyrian empire, which captured the northern kingdom of Israel and threatened to capture Judah. The prophecy is specifically against the capital city of Assyria, Ninevah. In response to the almost complete destruction of Israel and all of its inhabitants, Assyria will be punished by God -- in fact, God's anger will not be stopped and the empire will be completely destroyed. At the same time, God will protect Judah, in the face of overwhelming odds, from the much larger Assyrian army.
